Volunteers are vital to building capacity among localities to help care for their communities’ trees.
The Tree Tenders® training, a trademark of Pennsylvania Horticulture Society (PHS) and developed in collaboration with Penn State Extension Urban Foresters and DCNR Bureau of Forestry staff, educates citizens about tree biology, tree planting, tree maintenance, and a suite of urban forestry practices. Upon completion of the training, Tree Tenders are poised to become advocates and volunteers in their community to help maintain their community trees. Volunteers help build capacity among local government to understand, protect, and restore their community trees. By conducting tasks such as mulching, watering, pruning, and data collection and entry, volunteers help stretch communities resources.
